St Petersburg University
St Petersburg University is one of the oldest universities in Russia. Its history goes back to 1724 when Peter I issued a decree establishing three institutions that formed the research basis for the further development of the country: a Gymnasium, a University and an Academy of Sciences. The newly established University became a true enlightenment center available and accessible for all social strata and it is symbolic that Mikhail Lomonosov, a man of low-birth, who later became a prominent Russian scholar and educator, played a crucial role in the history of St Petersburg University.

ST PETERSBURG

St Petersburg - the Cultural Capital of Russia

St Petersburg was founded by Peter I in 1703 to become Russia’s new capital, the so-called “Window on Europe”, the city that would bring together the European and Russian cultural traditions. With time St Petersburg evolved to become the political center of the country and gained a prestigious status of the “cultural capital”. St Petersburg was the capital of Russia for 200 years and it is to that period in its history that it owes the Imperial look of its historic center designed and constructed by the leading Russian and European architects.

St Petersburg is one the world’s few cities to have been constructed to a Master plan. The austerity of its clear-cut streets and prospects combined with the charm of a water-front city create a unique image of St Petersburg. Due to its numerous rivers and canals that criss-cross the city in all directions as part of its founder’s plan, amazing architecture and long-standing cultural traditions St Petersburg has scored the name of the “Venice of the North”.

Today, architectural masterpieces erected by such prominent architects as Carlo Rossi, Domenico Trezzini, Bartolommeo Rastrelli, etc. became venues that host many important events including St Petersburg International Economic Forum and St Petersburg Dialogue or are the seat of such institutions as the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.

St Petersburg is one of Russia’s biggest sea ports, one of the country’s major transport hubs. Besides, St Petersburg with its major educational and research institutions is one of the most “European” cities in Russia.

Millions of visitors from all over the world come the city to see the celebrated collections of the Hermitage and the Russian Museums, the Bronze Horseman and the spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral and to enjoy ballet and opera in the famous Mariinsky Theatre. These cultural attractions have become not only the symbols of St Petersburg but of entire Russia. The city has a lot to offer in terms of culture: there are over 200 museums and 70 theatres in St Petersburg, which has a modern infrastructure and friendly residents who are proud of their historic heritage and are always eager to introduce the visitors and guests of the “Venice of the North” to it.
