AREA STUDIES: EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN STUDIES

The “Area studies: European Studies” and “Area Studies: American Studies” programs provide for the basic higher education level. Their major study focus is international relations in the context of the chosen region of the world.

During a 4-year study course the students are introduced to a wide range of disciplines. Besides, their specialization provides knowledge of the major international organizations as well as political and economic systems of the relevant region. Thus, the disciplines offered to the students include: world economy and international relations, regional international organizations, modern advertizing and information technology, history and theory of international relations. In addition, the students learn two foreign languages appropriate for the chosen region.

What distinguishes the Area Studies from other areas is that the program students analyze international relations in the context of the regional problems, national and supranational economies, law and culture.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

The BA program “International Relations” provides for the basic higher education level. The program is focused on the problems of economic and political development of different countries of the world, the past and present of international relations, the practices and procedures of different international organizations and their activity. It also aims to provide the students with useful practical skills of analysis and forecasting.

During a 4-year course of study the students are offered a wide range of disciplines including both humanities such as cultural studies, national history, philosophy, etc., and special courses such as diplomacy, geopolitics, world economy and international economic cooperation, international organizations, political forecasting and many others.

The program students study two foreign languages and focus on the issues related to the global problems. They study the activity and agenda of the UN, international governmental organizations and NGOs, the Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affaires and other issues.

APPLIED IT-TECHNOLOGY IN THE SPHERE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

This major was introduced at the School of International Relations in 2001 and implies a 5-year course of study.

The range of disciples offered includes those related to international relations and information technology, negotiations and international communication.

The program students have a unique opportunity to learn about the advanced solutions offered by the world’s leading vendors like Microsoft, Canon, Nortel and IBM as well as to participate in the joint programs and internship schemes developed by the School together with the Russian offices of these companies.

An important competitive advantage of this program is quite a modest number of graduates – not more than 10 specialists a year.

Upon the completion of their studies the program graduates work both at state institutions and private companies, in the IT sphere or state governance and diplomacy.

The curriculum of the School of International Relations includes not only lectures, seminars, semester projects and exams: many well-known Russian and foreign politicians, scholars, publicists and diplomats visit the School as guest-lectures or with a master-class. The School regularly hosts round-table discussions and seminars, international scientific and student conferences. Due to the existing internship scheme many of the School students have an opportunity to get some hands-on experience and “learn the ropes” of their chosen field of international relations as early as during the second year of their studies.
